Why so far away?

This Blog is about my adventures in Greenland - I am here as part of my internship at the Ministry of Higher Education in Denmark.

I have been given the opportunity to spend 7 weeks in Nuuk, at the Ministry of Education, Church, Culture and Gender Equality.

My main goal for this trip, is to have an adventure - learn about a different work-culture and grow some (imaginative!!!!!!!) hair on my chest.

I leave on Saturday the 29'th of June 2013, and return to Denmark on Saturday the 17'th of August 2013.

Arrival

So here I am - day 5 in Nuuk, Greenland. The flight here wasn't as bad as I thought it would be - 4 hours passed fairly easily, helped along by breakfast, a Miley Cyrus movie and snoozing. My fat arse could just about fit in the seat - but my positioning was uncomfortable - a bit too leaned back, so the tray-table was resting om my belly and I could'nt lean forward... at least I now know that I have to pick the remote out of the armrest BEFORE sitting down.. man! that was a cirkus trying to pick it out while my thigh was squeezing my fingers.... there is nothing like a trip on a plane that makes you feel like an elephant in a mousecage... But I am used to uncomfortable seatings in planes - apparently there isn't any european airlines who has figured out that not all of us are skinny enough to be able to rotate in a tiny plane-seat... So I cope, and smile at my neighbour when I spill my drink or food, time after time because the tray-table tilts while I try and adjust myself in the seat. Thats enough bitching about fatty issues.. The flight was, as I said, quite alright - unfortunetly is was very cloudy, so I wouldn't see anything - only when flying over the east coast of Greenland, I saw the top of the mountains over the clouds. And after about 1½ hours break in Kangerlussuaq, we took off towards Nuuk in a little domestic aircraft, and on the way in, we flew under the clouds, and I could see the cliffs and the water - it was a beautiful view.
On arrival in Nuuk, I was welcomed by my contact person Kaj, and he took me to my room at Hotel Nuuk - which is now dormrooms for students - it is quite nice, and more than enough for me for the next 7 weeks. In the evening I met up with some frisnds from school, who are also in Nuuk right now - they will be going home on friday though, so then I am all by myself. We went out for beers and a couple of games of pool - it was nice having some familiar faces greeting me. Not much else has happened since I arrived on Saturday - well beside my first ever whale-sighting!! On monday Kaj took me for a drive, to show me around Nuuk, and while overlooking the bay, I saw the spout from 2 whales - they didn't show tails, or jump around in the water - but it was still absolutely fantastic! So I now have my binoculars in my bag at all times :)
